Introducing COVID-19 Relief Fund

BC Hydro announced the introduction of COVID-19 Relief Fund to help residential and waived commercial customers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, residential customers who have lost their job or are unable to work while staying at home with increased energy consumption, and small businesses who close their doors to reduce the spread of virus take the hardest hit. That is why BC Hydro is here to provide assistance during these challenging times.

Relief Fund Eligibility and Application

BC Hydro’s Residential Customers

Residential customers who are unable to work can apply to receive bill credit that is three times their average monthly bill amount. This is an average of $135 for people living in an apartment, and an average of $355 for people living in a single-family home.

The application is expected to open on April 6th, and eligible customers can apply until June 30th, 2020.

BC Hydro’s Commercial Customers

Small business owners who have had to close their business to reduce the spread of COVID-19 can also apply for their electricity cost waived for up to 3 months.

The application is expected to open on April 13th, and eligible customers can apply until June 30th, 2020.

Some background information

BC Hydro’s data shows residential electricity consumption from March 15th to March 31st was approximately 9% higher compared to the same time last year. With a comparison of 1% increase from 2017 to 2018 the same time of year.

 

With the same parameter, BC Hydro’s data also shows during the week of March 23 to 27, restaurant electricity consumption was down by 31%, hotel by 24%, and offices by 15%.
